The story
International biodiversity talks opened in Yerevan, Armenia, on 19 October 2026. The meeting, known as COP17, runs until 30 October. Governments are reviewing progress under a global agreement adopted in 2022 to protect and restore nature.
Biodiversity means the variety of life, including species and the ecosystems they form. Its protection involves decisions about farming, fishing, forests and finance, as well as nature reserves.
A UN assessment released before the talks describes both effort and delay. Nearly 90 per cent of parties to the biodiversity convention have set national targets. However, fewer than half of the national targets assessed by the parties are on track. These are national assessments, not a claim that half of all species are safe.
Delegates will consider how funding, scientific knowledge and cooperation can turn commitments into results. Indigenous peoples and local communities also have a role in the discussions. The conference is a progress check, rather than proof that the 2030 goals have already been achieved.
Three questions
Try answering before you open the answer. You can use your own words.
- Where and when did COP17 open?
Show answer
It opened in Yerevan, Armenia, on 19 October 2026.
- What is the difference between setting a target and being on track?
Show answer
Setting a target states an intended result. Being on track means progress is consistent with achieving it.
- Does the national-target figure measure how many species are safe?
Show answer
No. It describes progress assessments for national targets, not the proportion of species that are safe.
Let's talk about it

Practise a useful pattern
Use although to connect effort with a remaining difficulty. Write about a project you know.
Example: Although a town has a plan, it still needs money to carry it out.
