Build the plan around the instruction

A useful IELTS Writing Task 2 plan identifies what the question asks, your answer and the reasons that support it. Choose a structure that serves those requirements before choosing impressive vocabulary. A fluent essay about the broad topic can still miss the particular task.

Know the practical limits

IELTS requires at least 250 words for Task 2 and advises spending about 40 minutes on it. The answer must be connected prose, not notes or bullet points. The official criteria cover task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. A paragraph formula alone cannot guarantee a band score.

Identify every part of the question

Distinguish the subject from the instruction. A question may ask for your opinion, both views, causes and solutions, or two separate answers. Mark the parts that need a response. Do not automatically turn a discussion of both views into an essay that presents only your preferred side.

Keep the first plan small

Write a short position and select a few reasons you can explain. Four paragraphs can be useful for a straightforward opinion essay: introduction, two developed body paragraphs and conclusion. Adapt that outline when the question needs another arrangement. The purpose is to organize your response, not to satisfy a universal paragraph count.

An original example about libraries

Illustrative topic: Public libraries should remain free and welcoming even when many resources are available online. To what extent do you agree?

Essay plan
Position: keep libraries welcoming
Reason 1: free access to books
Reason 2: quiet places to study
Conclusion: support local libraries

These are starting notes, not an answer of the required length. In the introduction, make the position precise: support free public libraries alongside online resources. A body paragraph could explain how borrowing books helps a person who cannot buy them. Another could describe a student whose crowded home makes quiet study difficult. These are hypothetical examples, not statistics.

Develop the connection, not just the list

For each main idea, explain why it matters and how it supports your answer. The borrowing example links free access to the value of keeping libraries open. A sentence about quiet study should connect that benefit to the same position. Adding furthermore between unrelated claims does not create a coherent argument.

Leave room to revise

One possible practice budget is five minutes to plan, thirty to write and five to review. This is a suggested routine, not an IELTS rule. During review, check that every requested part is answered, your position stays consistent and each paragraph develops its point. Correct obvious grammar and spelling mistakes before adding extra ideas at the last moment.
